How I Got Lucky in Network Marketing

Some people think you have to be lucky to have success in network marketing.  Some people say that I got lucky to have hit the jackpot… twice.

So today I’m going to explain how I did it, because I believe you create your own luck.

It has to do with understanding 2 major ideas:  how wealth is created and how to master your own self-discipline.  And with these two ingredients, you really can accomplish anything.  Let me show you…

How I Set Myself Up To Get Lucky In Business

Recently I was laying in a tent when the idea of this training came to be.

I have two young boys, and it was about 17 degrees outside and the boys were just “sawing logs” (in a deep sleep) and I was wide awake, laying there with my hands behind my head and looking up.  There was a full moon that lit up the tent.

So while I was laying there, I was just thinking. I was thinking about how there is nothing greater than being a dad, and how lucky I feel to have found the true love of my life. How lucky I am to be in Network Marketing and to have been successful in my efforts so that I could get the farm that I wanted and live where I want to live and work when I want to work.

I just laid there and was like, “Why am I so lucky?” That’s what I was asking myself.

As I thought about this, I answered my own question.

I finally said, “That wasn’t luck.” Every single step of the way things occurred,  and by consistently stepping towards greater and greater understanding of business, I was able to get myself in the right positions.

And that’s what I want to share with you today.

History: How Hunters Acquire Meat and Warriors Acquire Land

I’m fascinated with history. It’s a love of mine because each human being on this Earth has had a lifetime of experiences and it’s just fascinating to me.

I ended up drawing this one column in my head, and then I ended up drawing another column that would connect.

Acquisition is King

I started looking and seeing that what occurs and has occurred all through the history is that it all started off with hunters, and what they did was acquire meat, right?

And then the fishermen acquired fish. At that point in time, the acquisition of fish was the most important thing.

Eventually farmers came along and they acquired crops. They would work most of the spring and then they would harvest the crops, and so it was about acquiring food.

And then I thought about the nights and the warriors and how they  acquired land for the king,  and that was key for the king to build the empire.

I’ll skip through a lot of history now and just say that it has always been about acquisition.

And right now at this time on Earth, it is the sales person who acquires the customer that is the most valued. And they are given a currency so they are able to buy other things.

That is the journey that I’ve been on is understanding that acquisition is the king.

Acquisition has always been king.

The Scale of Acquisition and Consumption

I want you to picture a vertical scale. Acquisition is at the top and Consumption is down at the bottom. In this model, the furthest away you could get from acquisition would be pure consumption.

Think about somebody who is on welfare or dependent on someone else to survive; they are on the consumption side; there’s not much on the acquisition side.

On the other hand, if a person is on the acquisition side, that tends to be where the most security comes from because it’s where the most profit margins come from.

If you look back at the hunters – they would go out and hunt. They would kill and get meat, and then they would bring it back to the tribe.  There were people in the tribe that were not able to hunt because they didn’t have the skillset yet. They hadn’t trained enough yet. Or maybe they didn’t have this thing I call  self-discipline to be able to hunt.

They just didn’t do it. They didn’t push themselves to learn the skills to be able to do it.

It’s no different than today, and that was what stunned me as I was laying there. I was like, “Wow, that really is true.”

The Scale of Self-Discipline vs Victim Mentality

Thinking back to the Acquisition vs. Consumption diagram, now I want you to imagine self-discipline at the top of the scale, and then victim down at the bottom.

When you look at this scale, I hope you can see that it is not “luck” when a person starts down at the bottom or close to the bottom of the scale and then climbs up the scale to acquisition or self-discipline.

That person climbs up the ladder to have an understanding that wealth is about the acquisition of customers.

Wealth Is About the Acquisition of Customers

The person who has the most customers has a lot; that’s the whole thing.

Throughout history, when meat or crops were acquired, that was a lot of “wealth.” When the kings acquired land, that was a lot of wealth and when they acquired gold, that was a lot of wealth.

So when you look at this drawing at self-discipline or acquisition, what does it take?

Does it take luck to get there?

No! No, it’s not luck. Well, maybe for some, but I’m not going to count on luck.

I had to count on self-discipline.

What Does It Take to Get to the Top?

One of my big steps in life was when I decided that I was going to leave my hometown and join the Navy.

That was a big step.

I wanted to go into underwater welding, and the only way that I could do it was to get trained in the Navy.

I had to crawl up that ladder. And then when they told me that I couldn’t weld under water for four years, I put in a request chit every single day for three years.

Not a lot of people were willing to do that. But because I was so determined to get there, I did.

It takes that determination and that self-discipline to climb up that ladder.

It’s Not Luck Unless…

I was reading something to my 10 year old son and I was talking to him about self-discipline. I told him where self-discipline comes from.

I said, “It comes from within you.”

I asked him to give me an example but he couldn’t come up with one.

That’s the reason I wanted to do this video.

Some people think wealth (or anything of value) is because of luck. It is not luck unless you understand self-discipline and acquisition.

You must understand that acquisition is king at this time in life and that self-discipline has always been king.

You have to go up that ladder. Going up the ladder is a skillset. It is also a habit.

Conversely, it is also a habit to be at the bottom… blame, victim, all kinds of stuff down there is just noise.

You have to power up to get out of that zone.

Building Your Self-Discipline Muscles

I want you to picture that there’s different rungs on the scale, and different attitudes in life or mindsets, whatever you want to call them. The bottom line is: can you get yourself to do something?

That’s a habit.

You run down the scale and you can’t get yourself to do something. What you have to do is work out that muscle called “I’m going to do what I say I’m going to do.”

It’s believing in yourself.

It’s “I’m going to go to bed at 10 o’clock.” And go to bed at 10. Not 10:05, not 10:01. Go to bed at 10:00.  If you’re going to get up at six, then do it.

Whatever it is, strengthen that muscle of just doing the little things so that you can build back your self-confidence that you do what you say you’re going to do.

And so you build up that self-discipline because when you get over into the Pipeline – I know you know this and I’ve drawn it a million times –  which is:

  • Contact
  • Set appointments
  • Presentation
  • Follow up, and then
  • Get a customer and serve them
  • And after doing all of that you make money

It takes a lot of thrust to power up the self-discipline and bust through all of the noise over here that everybody else deals with; that I had to deal with.

I had to kick my way up through there. Everybody else has to as well.

You get a lead and then take that lead on a journey, contact them, set appointments, do presentations and follow up.

If they say no, move them off the board, do another one.

That is how I got lucky.

It Pays To Be a Winner

One of the things that is always on my mind is an exercise that we had to do in special operations called “It Pays to be a Winner.”

The first time that you hear it, it’s just a phrase, but I want to tell a story that happened to me so that you can get the intensity that I got from “It Pays to be a Winner.”  I believe that it is the entire secret as to why I was willing to walk up that ladder.

In special operations, we were doing wind sprints, and I think the length we ran was probably about half of a football field. The instructor said, “It pays to be a winner.”

I remember hearing it. We all took off running and the person who won, got to sit out.

Imagine a 50 yard field. We all sprinted one way, but only one person won. For that person, it pays to be a winner. He got to sit out while the rest of us sprinted the length of the field two more times, and then he joined the race again.

And guess what? Why does it pay to be a winner? Well, he got to rest two runs. And so of course he’s always going to win now.

That’s what I understood, and so I always had to make sure that I was at least ahead of the last person.

Why?

Because they started to cut people from the team. The last person running was cut.  One by one they would cut the last person running, and I didn’t want to be the loser.

It paid to be a winner and it was horrible to be a loser.

I believe that had a whole lot to do with me building this thing called self-discipline. It is getting yourself to do what you say you’re going to do.

This is different from discipline. When you get a speeding ticket, you didn’t have self-discipline to slow yourself down. The policeman pulled you over and gave you a ticket; that is what slows you down. That’s called discipline.

Self-discipline is when you get yourself to do something.

It Pays For You to Control Your Actions

One thing I learned from “It Pays to be a Winner” is that it pays for me to control my actions.

The Navy was looking for people who were willing to dig deeper.

When you run a whole bunch of wind sprints, and every single time you’ve got to beat somebody in order to stay in the game, then it gives you a different perspective on life.

Right Now Is the Time To Build

It’s common in Network Marketing for people to make excuses. They think things like, “Well, network marketing…it’s always going to be there,” in other words, they don’t just dig in and do it. Or they blame their lack of action on the company, or something like that.

All you have to do is study history and you’re going to see that’s not true, not true at all.

Now is the best time to build. Why? Well, because right now acquisition is king. And so if I have a team of people who acquire customers and reps that keep multiplying my effort, I don’t believe there’s a better game.

I hope you get as lucky as I did. And the way I got lucky was understanding where wealth is today (how it’s generated) and understanding self-discipline.
