How Can You Share the Business if You Haven’t Been Successful Yourself?

I was talking with a gentleman once and I was showing him the business. He then said, “Well, why would someone listen to me? I don’t have any business experience.”

Today’s discussion is part of a series that I’m doing, which is all about what prevents someone from joining your network marketing business.

This training is all about the situation where you’re talking to a prospect and then that prospect says, “Wait a minute. Now, why would somebody listen to me? Who am I to teach somebody business?

They might say something like:

  • I’ve not been successful in business
  • I’ve never done business
  • I’m a bricklayer, (or some other profession)

My Biggest Barrier

This concern about not having any business experience was my biggest barrier coming into the industry.

More specifically, I didn’t go to college, and so therefore I didn’t think I had any authority on the subject of business.

I didn’t realize this at the start but what I learned is that even if you don’t have business experience, you must realize that you don’t have to be an expert at business, or even have a lot of business experience or education.

You are just the messenger.

You are not the opportunity, the products or the compensation.  What you are doing is you are assisting people.  That’s it.

If you invite somebody to church, you’re not saying “I’m God,” or, “I can forgive you of your sins” or “I’m the expert in this religion.”

Right? You’re just saying, “Hey, come church with me.”

Think about it another way.

If you invite someone to a yoga class or to the gym, you’re not going to make that person fit. You’re just saying, “Hey, come with me. Let’s lose some weight” or “Let’s get into shape.”

Or another example: if you invite someone to a college or vocational course, it’s not your responsibility to make sure they learn and master the subject. That’s not your job.  All you are doing is sharing something, showing them something, and then you’re doing it with them. That’s all that it is.

Your willingness to talk to your “chicken list” is based on your ability to communicate easily with them. If you knew you could communicate easily and effectively without making any mistakes, you could, and would talk with anyone without hesitation. You would have confidence. You would have certainty. And there’s NOTHING more rewarding than having that feeling.

Status Levels

Let’s change gears and talk about “statuses” because you’re probably thinking what about reaching out to someone who has more experience than you.

What I’ve observed about myself and in others is that we tend to group people into statuses.

You know people or are going to to meet people who you view in the same status that you are in. The conversation I have with these people is simply, “Let’s do this together.”

People who are in a lower status than you, the conversation is still going to be, “Let’s do this together.”

When that’s the approach I take, I never worry about how the prospect views me. That’s the way I think.

I am not going to get into a situation where I’m worried about how the prospect views me. I wasted an enormous amount of time worrying about me sharing this business idea and what the person’s opinion of me would be.

I’m telling you I wasted years worrying about that.

You’re also going to encounter people who are at a higher status.

What I really learned here is that person already knows they know more than me. And if they don’t recognize that right away, they’ll probably find out in just a couple of minutes. Right? Isn’t that what goes through our mind?

So the way I would approach a conversation with someone like this is to just talk about business in a way make sense to them:

  • “Would you be interested in learning about something that could give you an additional source of income?”
  • “Would you be interested in increased cashflow?”

I know a lot of people who are investors and they’re diversified with their money – they’ve got it in the stock market, in real estate and other investments. To them, I’d ask a question like:

  • “Hey, do you need cashflow or a multi-country diversification?”
  • “Do you have geographic diversification? I’ve noticed the market has receded a little bit and this might be a way to generate some extra cash flow.”

I didn’t know any of that terminology or jargon when I first got into the business. I had to learn it!

If you can,  get the idea in your mind that you’re just trying to simply suggest to someone an additional source of income or increasing cash flow or multi-country diversification.

Be Willing To Try

The whole concept of this video has to do with helping a person who feels as though they can’t do it because they don’t have any experience. Think of it this way: if everyone had to have experience first, then nothing would happen.

You get what I mean here – if you have to have experience in order to get a job or to do a particular thing, then no one could ever get started.  Right?

The way around this is to help the person realize that hey, they can step out of this and realize, “I CAN do this.”

And then whatever happens out of that happens; the conversation is now open.
