When They Ask You How Much Money You’re Making

Today we’re talking about how to answer the dreaded question of when your prospect asks how much money you’re making in your business.
I’m going to show you why you never have to dread that question again.
Here’s the deal: If “success in Network Marketing” is a requirement in order to have success… no one would ever succeed.
You’ve got to start somewhere. And when you’re starting a business, everyone starts at ground zero.
When You Start Making Money, I’ll Do It
When I was very young in the business, I would reply back with:
“I’m not making anything, man, come on. It’s a brand new business. But the person that I’m following is making a lot of money and I’m doing absolutely everything that they did and they tell me to do. They are on the track a little bit earlier than me, but I’m right behind him.”
Some people would say, “Well, when you start making money, let me know.”
And I would say, “What amount?”
I’d kind of pin them down that way. And you know what’s interesting about that? Not one person ever joined. It didn’t matter if I was making $150,000 a month, they would still have objections and say things like, “Yeah, you were lucky. You got in early.”
That is the tough part of trying to work with people who think this way.
What Are You Looking For?
The main thing that I want you to learn from this is that all businesses are built in the same direction.
There’s a person who has a concept or an idea. And they normally connect with someone who is a marketer and they start working. As they build the business they hire an assistant and then they either run out of time or talent.
One or the other (either time or talent) is going to get them first, but both are going to get them in the end. They don’t have enough talent in order to do everything, so they need a programmer.
Well, they’re going to need a person to handle customer service, and so they have to hire a bunch of people.
The reality is, when a new business starts out, the owner starts out not making anything.
That’s why I think there is really just no reason to even ask, “How much are you making?”
The Question That Should Be Asked
There’s no reason to do that because that’s not the direction that you build a business. When you’re new in business and just getting started in Network Marketing, the appropriate question to ask would be:
“Is there anyone in the company making money?”
Well, if the answer to that is yes, then that’s all you need to hear.
When I started my second business, there wasn’t anyone else in the company, but I knew the Pipeline and I knew how to do it.
How To Respond To The Money Question
The way I like to approach this, is to only look for someone who wants to build their own business. That way, when business comes up in the conversation I can ask questions that help provide a solution to what they want. I find that when I take this approach, it’s a very logical conversation with the other person.
I’m not in the business of trying to convince people to do the business.
If the person asks how much money you’re making with antagonism, and is poking at you, I like to just simply ask the question, “Well, have you thought about other businesses…what else would you do?”
They usually reply with an idea they’ve had. And I reply back with: “Ok, and how much money would you be making in your first week? Well, probably nothing, right? And that’s the same situation I’m in.”
That’s the way that I like to go about this conversation.
Key Points
- When I’m talking to prospects, I’m not trying to convince them or change their attitude. That’s important.
- I’m looking for someone who already wants to start a business. And then I’ll show them a business model and ask them if it’s logical. It’s a very different conversation.
